MBT may be Type-90 or Type-74 (there not being enough Type-90 to fully outfit the division). Type-90 MBT is only used on Hokkaido as its heavy weight means it cannot be used safely on other islands.
From 1990 the fifth tank company was added to each tank regiment.
There are six infantry companies so that one each may be attached to each tank regiment (converting them into a combined arms task force) while still retaining a normal battalion of mech infantry. From 2004, the sixth infantry company is a reserve unit - morale=green.
The fourth engineer company is reserve, morale=green.
The divisional recce troop orginally had M-41, then Type-74, then Type-87.
The 7th Artillery Regiment was originally three battalions 105mm and 1 battalion 155mm.
At Army -level are AT Helicopter Regiments (with 4-flights AH-1S and 1-flight OH-1/OH-6); Heavy Artillery Battalions (with 2-stands M110A2 or 4 stands MLRS); AA Groups (with I-HAWK or lighter SAMs).
Japan's military has a Helicopter transport Brigade with 4 squadrons each of two flights of CH-47 Chinook and 1 squadron with 1 flight of UH60 and 1 flight of OH-1.

Several Japanese divisions have or are being downsized to brigades in line with the objective of an army of "Nine Divisions, Six Brigades, Central Readiness Force". For instance, in 2008 the 11th Infantry Division was reorganised as the 11th Modernised Comprehensive Brigade with an authorised strength of 3,600 rather than the 7,200 it previously had on authorisation. The brigade-ization process includes reducing the size of the tank regiment to a battalion of seven-stands, the artillery regiment to a unit of 4-SP howitzer stands, the engineer battalion to a company, the AA battalion to a battery and various support and logistics units. Three infantry regiments still remain.
